Crazy Things My Kids Said This Week #9

By now those of you that regularly read this blog have these posts figured out. My kids, and really all kids that I have ever spent time with, say some of the coolest things! I am writing them in this blog for two reasons:

  • So that I do not forget, and can share their wisdom with them when they are older
  • I want to  share these moments with all of you, so that you will look for these moments with the kids in your life
We have had a few funny moments lately, but Kately had the most memorable lines of the week. Not so much because she said funny or silly things, but because she is so darn cute and saying things that we have never heard her say before. Keep in mind that Nate was 3 or 3 and a half before he really started talking, and she is just barely 2.

Rainbow Crayon

On Saturday the kids were sitting at the kitchen table coloring. I was going about my business, letting them color and play when Katelyn became very adamant that I listen to her. She pointed at her brother and proudly told me,
"Nate use rainbow crayon!"
I looked, and sure enough, he had about 8 crayons in one hand, coloring with all of them at the same time. I thought this was a pretty insightful observation from a 2 year old.

I was up and getting ready for work on Monday morning when Katelyn walked into the bathroom and said "You play ball me?" I explained that I would love to play with her, but that I had to go to work. I promised to play with her after work. She looked right at me, and said, with a tone that she could only have learned from listening to Carley,
"You need stay inside. It's hot! You play ball me?"
My heart melted a little, and we played ball for a minute or two before I headed to work.

We drove to Tulsa on Sunday. The kids were in the back playing, and Katelyn was playing with her baby doll. She held the dolly upside down and broke out a word we had never heard her say before,
"Baby do handstand!"
Sorry for the bad shot, had to work fast to catch the moment.

Last night at dinner I was talking with the kids. General dinner conversation... How was your day?, Where did you go?, Did you keep your undies dry?... you know, normal stuff. I told Katelyn that she was a little cutie pie, and Nate said,
 "You mean awesome pie!"

I am glad you took a minute to read about our little girls quotes of the week. I'd really love to share some of your quotes on this blog. Take a minute to send me a tweet, email, FaceBook message or leave a comment below!

Crazy Things My Kids Say, Volume 8

Those of you who have children know, these little creatures say some very entertaining things. I got some great advice from someone I work with. She speaks from experience, as her children are now in their late teens and early twenties, when she tells me, "Chuck, you need to write these things down."

I decided that I not only need to write these things down, but I need to share them with other parents as well. Most of these quotes will have no context, because, to be quite honest, we usually don't get any context from the kids. We just happen to hear a part of what they are saying, and they will almost never repeat the phrases or explain them to us.

Here are the gems for this week:

As we were getting ready to eat dinner, our son decided to change his clothes. FYI those of you who don't have kids, this happens any time you want to eat, leave the house, teach them something, etc. I went to his room and asked him how long he was going to be. His response, "About 29 hours!"

We have had a bout with poison ivy this week. Nate probably had it worse than any of us. One night before bed I was putting some calamine lotion on his belly. I asked him how it felt. He looked at me very matter-of-factly and stated "It's getting hot and cold in here."

I was getting the kids ready for bed the next night and they had the charm turned up to 11. The few minutes before bed are when some of the most precious things come from a child's mouth, even if I think this one on me as a stall tactic. That being said, it was said in such a loving manner, then repeated by Katelyn, that my heart melted. He looked me right in the eye and gave me the compliment of the year, "Daddy, I love you more than ice cream!"

The last quote I wanted to share with you guys this week is "Elephants are as big as grandma!" Nate said it, but I have no idea what brought it on. We got no context, no warning, no explanation. We don't know which Grandma, why he was thinking about elephants or any other details. I tried to get him to talk more about it, but he just moved on to "Are rhinos tougher than elephants?"

Those were our funny quotes this week. With kids around, you never know what to expect. Please let me know in the comments section any of the funny things the kids in your life have said. I'd love to hear your stories. I would love to do a blog post of quotes from all of you one day soon! I just need you to share those quotes with me!

Here are the gems for this week:

Over dinner a few nights ago Nate asked "Dad, do horseflies have beaks or a regular horse nose?"

Other than that last quote, paleontology seemed to be the theme this week.

As I gave him his bath, Nate informed me, "Pteranodons are theropods." This seems to be wrong, as a theropod would be a dinosaur that walked on two legs. Pteraodon is also absent from the list of theropod dinosaurs found here.   Incorrect facts aside, I was impressed with his proper usage of two very large words.

We were cleaning rocks out of the shed (long story) when Nate warned me "Look Daddy, fossils. Don't get too close because they are very old."

And my personal favorite of the week, Nate asked me what happened to all of the dinosaurs. I told him that they went to live with heavenly father. He corrected me, proclaiming that "When the dinosaur dies he goes to Dinosaur Heavenly Father (capitalized to pay homage to an what appears to be a deity that my child invented)."
